News and Rumours: Last edit: 12/05/01
Adaptec's licence to use the Gracenote CDDB (tm) has expired.
Lookups by ECDC 4 leave your CD Tracks identified by this message, and very difficult to re-update.
Gracenote sue ROXIO for using FREEDB in ECDC 5, ROXIO dismiss it as "sour grapes" at losing their custom.
Advice at the FREEDB site works for me in redirecting lookups - but another user found it did not.
CD Spin Doctor (ECDC 4 Deluxe) is the only ROXIO/Adaptec component (in ECDC 4) which allows you to update an already identified CD.

In other news, until I have time to fully cover this and revamp the layout to multipage...
Some site features are/were unavailable (Messageboard/Guestbook/Counter) due to eFront Media cutting off most of the sites (including ByteCenter) who hosted with them - ByteCenter will return!
The only good thing about eFront, is the Freeware PowerArchiver program, although it looks like they are pulling sponsorship for that - victims of the drop in ad revenues, or architects of their own doom by their reportedly poor treatment of their "cash cow" webmasters.
POWERARCHIVER - GET IT! - voted "Pricelessware" by the members of alt.comp.freeware

Announcing: The JVC XR-W2080 emergency bootloader
Activated by holding EJECT during power-up, the drive will drop into JVC XR-W2080 bootloader mode - even drives which are 4080 based use the same loader. This allows re-flashing an apparently lost drive, with two drives already saved by this method so far.
Thanks to a messageboard poster for this tip!

And finally - The JVC 2.53 loader seems to be locked to a JVC drive identity - to load 2.53 firmware to a drive with one of the other identities, either activate bootloader mode, or use the loader from the Smart & Friendly firmware.

I would also like to congratulate ROXIO on rectifying that disaster of an update website they had at the beginning of the year. The current update site is a little "busy" in appearance but functional otherwise. A top-level breakdown into English and "International" would improve it greatly.

I'll do for this DigiCam, what I did for the CD-RW drive!PS. Samsung Digimax 800k camera - I now have one of these, expect some pictures, and an in-depth including how to swap their dismal driver for one which makes it act like a proper digital camera, with thumbnail download, selection and selective deletion. If you need help with this, or the Jenoptik JD12, or any of the other re-brands of the basic Minton model that these are derived from, ask me, or wait for the site!
The lens trim may vary, but if it looks similar, then it probably is one!

SAF 2.47 fails DCD Format

It appears that SAF 2.47 firmware has severe problems with DirectCD and CD-RW media.
Drive Specifications
LoadingTray loader with drop flap
Read Speed24x max CAV mode, 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x CLV
it also appears that CD-RW media is read at 8x CLV
Write/Rewrite Speed2x/2x (4x/2x for the related XR-W4080 model)
Access Time150mS quoted, but poor on random read
InterfaceATAPI, PIO mode 3, Multi word DMA 1
Buffer2 Mb (1860k reported)
DAE support
(CLV mode only)
Measured at 7x by ECDC
8x, 4x, 2x, 1x - by Feurio
Offset and jitter levels are tolerable, repeatability good
Other functionsDAO/TAO/SAO support (Appears to be DAO-Cuesheet, not DAO-RAW)
Packet Write
Write Test
UPC/ISRC (only in later firmware)
CD-Text (2.44 or above)
80 minute CD (only in later firmware)
Over burn - possible, presumably with later firmware
The drive is detected as DAO RAW by programs such as DiscJuggler, but only seems capable of SAO RAW
OverburnWith 2.51, Feurio was used for testing (Extras on the CD Writer menu)
For a 74min blank, the test failed unless the maximum was reduced to 78min, with 77:02 reported
With an 80min blank (79:59), test failed until the maximum was reduced to 83:00, with 82:00 reported.
It seems this drive immediately rejects anything more than 4 minutes over.
I have not tried 80-plus or 90/99 minute media, but the limit would be 83:59, so it's hardly worth trying
PSX CopyVery mixed reports, some say it will, some it won't
Firmware2.06 conflicts with Adaptec UDF reader and DCD3
SAF 2.47 has a number of reported problems with CD-RW and DirectCD
Creative 2.51 appears to be the only 100% capable firmware, but JVC 2.53 may be ok as well
Software Picks
(assuming later firmware)
ADAPTEC - Satisfactory
Feurio - must use Creative 4224 Feurio driver
1.52 offers a "generic" driver, but this is incompatible with CD-Text. I advise the continued use of the Creative 4224 driver.

Padus Disc Juggler (1x free edition) - Test ok on basic material, supports overburn, correction required for RAW
DUPLICATOR 2.3b - FAIL - I expect the drive does not have the DAO/RAW capability required.

Firmware Versions by Drive / Maker
Make/ModelFirmwareNotes
Creative RW2024E
Blaster 2224
2.19 Not really good enough! Try it if you have a Creative drive, but you may need better
Despite the peculiar number - 2024, this definitely looks like XR-W2080 based firmware
Creative RW4224E
XR-W4080 based
2.51 / 1.44 This firmware is dual, 1.44 for the RW4224E (4080) and 2.51 for the RW2024E (2080) - see the evidence here - now verified.
The Creative loader will not load any other drive
HiVal H2242 2.06 Local copy Hival site down (07/07/00) and back up (30/07/00) - Local firmware copy added.
General CD-ROM/CD-R driver page
Reports: - 2.44 Memorex (unknown), 2.47 SAF (other problems), 2.51 Creative (success), 2.53 JVC XR_W2080 (now in use)
HP 7500i, 7550, 7570 See text Caution - later models are Sony CRX100 with reduced write speed (thanks to Andy McFadden - CDR FAQ)
Reports in RUMOURS at CDRINFO indicate that this firmware can be used to convert the drive into a HP8100 with 4x write, and it fixes the 78 min limit on 80 min media - I cannot comment further on this procedure, since I do not own this type of drive.
I have been unable to verify any 2080 based examples - I suspect that original reports are incorrect

RW2224 2.06
Also found as XR-W2082, firmware files are separate, but not sure how they differ. Both may be located at - Firmware Page with more updates at the FTP Server
JVC FAQ indicates that "No JVC drives are supported by DirectCD", although this may be more political than technical as JVC have their own UDF product
For more JVC firmware, see Pacific Digital
NB. "Not supported" can mean either "It won't work" or "We don't consider it" - the latter in this case, as it does work
2.53 loader is JVC identity locked - use the loader (SAF.EXE) from Smart & Friendly 2.47 for other OEM id's
Memorex/Dysan CD-RW2224 2.44 Updates page, many models

JVC 2x2x24, Mitsumi 4802/4804, and 4416 (Yamaha?) download area, and JVC update info
This appears to be the latest JVC issue firmware, for JVC brand drives.
I do not know if DirectCD will accept a JVC branded drive as valid.
This firmware (JVC XR-W2080) is now in use by the author, and seems satisfactory.
This firmware is also 1.46 for the matching 4x2x24 models, XR-W4080, XR-W4082 and RW4224
2.53 loader is JVC identity locked - use the loader (SAF.EXE) from Smart & Friendly 2.47 for other OEM id's
RWD RW2224 Not found The only reference I can find is in the Adaptec ECDC registry entries
CAR references abound on any search - (R)ear (W)heel (D)rive
Smart and Friendly CD Racer
SAF CD-RW2224

Verified Jan 2001, not sure if all files available

2.47
Local Copy

Local, 2.06

Smart and Friendly are now reported to be bankrupt, after much uncertainty.
An additional, slightly incomplete, archive is here. The same point as for Creative applies - the firmware is also version 1.40 for the CD SpeedWriter Plus XR-W4080. (personally verified - load file is Vsf140a.hex, see the evidence for both Creative and SAF here)
More Smart and Friendly support from the Verbatim site

I will add the 2.06 FW (not available there) for SAF 2224 users having difficulty with 2.47 firmware, but I do not recommend 2.06 firmware of any type
2.47 Firmware: Problems with Direct CD format are confirmed

Special Edition
JVC XR-W2080 FAQ
2.51 The Creative 2.51 firmware, with the SAF loader
This will load any 2080 drive with RW2024E 2.51
As far as I dare "recommend" any firmware update, this is it!
See also - JVC 2.53 firmware at Pacific Digital

It is legitimate only for Creative owners who are having difficulty reloading, having already loaded non-Creative firmware. If Creative order it's removal, you will just have to make your own compound loader

More Detail... Direct Download links above I succeeded with the re-flash of a Hival H2242, firmware 2.06 and the UDF Reader conflict,
to Smart and Friendly SAF CD-RW2224, firmware 2.47, and swapped one set of problems for another - see SAF 2.47 fails DCD format.
Re-flashing with Creative 2.51 firmware appears to have been 100% successful, but the Creative loader stalled for many nerve-racking minutes until I cancelled.
Do not even THINK about trying to edit your drive name into another firmware - it's almost certainly checksummed, and one wrong move could wreck your drive
It appears that any brand of firmware will work with any brand of drive. If the Installer program is reluctant, you may have to combine an Installer which does recognize your drive brand with the firmware you are trying to install
Given the similarity between 2080 and 4080 firmware, I wonder if there is a minor internal link change which could convert a 2x write 2080 into a 4x write 4080.... This is for somebody much braver with an expensive drive than I am, but see the Rumors section at CDRINFO for some examples of Name Conversion, and this site for the conversion of a Yamaha 2260 to 4260, and several others.

I'm convinced..... How do I update?
You have read the disclaimer - go back if you have not.
If your drive is still under warranty, you may prefer to complain to the manufacturer, and possibly to your local trading standards department, since the drive is arguably not fit for purpose if it cannot work with standard software and requires remedial work to do so

I repeat again, only use non-original firmware in order to resolve a problem, not just for the sake of a version update. Always look for your own maker's firmware first!
Also be aware that it can be difficult to lower a firmware version - the loader may reject it.

Another point to beware of - if any software is keyed to a particular drive identity, then changing the firmware to another maker's may disable the software. Retail and ordinary OEM bundle versions should normally be ok, but some more unusual package versions may not be.

  1. If you have the UDF Reader conflict, disable the UDF Reader as described earlier
  2. Configure the system with the drive as single Secondary Master
  3. In Windows, Deselect DMA for the drive
  4. Ensure that there is no CD in the drive
  5. Unpack the update with a ZIP program, or self-extract
  6. When you run the installer
  7. Return drives to your preferred configuration after completing the update
  8. You may have to re-install software (I didn't) or re-test device speeds etc. (I did)
  9. If you had disabled the UDF Reader, now is the time to re-enable it. (I did)
